Background

Let’s do it scrappy! We can iterate later. We need to release a video and get community support! We can play with what we got now (Battletanx, Smash Bros), and we can borrow a power source from Dad.

This is a fantasy of what a video segment would look like. I haven't actually done any field filming

This is my portable Nintendo64. I built this project with the goal of filming youtube videos where I would go out in public and play games with strangers, sharing nostalgic favorite games and making new friends.

I had a few locations in mind where I could set up my small table and two chairs. One of them was the Appleway Trailhead on University street. On a Saturday morning, I set everything up, along with a large sign which read, “1v1 me and win a prize. Be in a YouTube video!”

I was pretty anxious about meeting strangers, so I brought along a white Monster Ultra to give me some extra brainpower. I started playing Super Mario 64 by myself, just to get warmed up.

Time passed, and no passerbyers seemed interested. I was at 10 stars, and at this point, I figured I could make a good video just out of beating SM64 in public, so that’s what I focused on. I was having fun playing one of my favorite childhood games while talking to the camera, and time passed like it was nothing.

Eventually, someone seemed interested. I teased the prize, a booster pack of Pokemon cards, and they were hooked. <@TODO name> was going grocery shopping and they were intrigued when they saw me gaming outside. We played a round of <@TODO game> and had a blast. We played the first round where I won. They wanted a rematch, and I was happy to oblige.

We played again, and they won the round! I gave them the prize and shook their hand. They held up their prize to the camera, smiled and waved before walking off to do their morning routine.
